Abstract
661,872. Automatic voltage and power control systems; rectifying. SORENSEN & CO., Inc. April 9, 1948 [April 11, 1947], No. 9984/48. Classes 38 (ii) and 38 (iv). The output voltage of a rectifier system or the power output of an oscillator supplied by the system is controlled either by a saturable reactor in series with the A.C. supply or by grid control of the rectifiers; according to the amplified output of a bridge including a diode valve, the tungsten filament of which is either connected across the D.C. output or coupled to the oscillator output. The diode 13 forms a bridge with resistors 10, 11, 12, and has its filament in series with resistors 59 and 62 connected across the output of a rectifier bridge 48. A rectifier 20 provides a D.C. potential across the bridge, and a valve 25 responsive to bridge balance controls the D.C. current from rectifier 31 to the control winding 36 of a saturable reactor 37. The A.C. winding of reactor 37 is in series with part of the winding of an autotransformer 42 so as to control the input to the transformer 15 supplying the main rectifier 48. A condenser 77 connected across the diode 13 increases the stability. In a modification, Figs. 2, 3, 4 (not shown), the saturable reactor forms part of a second bridge network, the output of which controls the phase of the grid voltage of a pair of thyratrons which, together with a pair of ignitrons, form a rectifier bridge. In a further modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), an oscillator is supplied by the D.C. output of the regulator, and the output of the oscillator is transformer coupled to the filament of the diode so that the D.C. voltage is controlled to maintain constant power output from the oscillator. Specification 654,116 is referred to.
