Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:0741276/IV(a)/1> wherein R is an alkanoyl radical containing not more than six carbon atoms, e.g. acetyl, and the preparation thereof by reacting D 17(20)-3-keto - 11(b ) - hydroxy - 20 - cyano - 21 - acyloxypregnene with osmium tetroxide and hydrolysing the osmate ester, e.g. with sodium sulphite, to form 3,20-diketo-11(b ), 17a -dihydroxy-21-acyloxy-pregnane. The 17,20-osmate ester is preferably formed in the presence of an organic solvent such as pyridine. The hydrolysis of the osmate ester may also be effected by means of an aqueous alkaline solution of formaldehyde, ascorbic acid or mannitol, or an aqueous solution of a mineral acid, e.g. hydrochloric acid. Examples describe the preparation of 3,20-diketo-11b , 17a -dihydroxy-21-acetoxypregnane. Specification 741,274 is referred to.
