A method of winding a package of yarn on a support, in which the package is driven by frictional contact between the yarn surface thereof and a driving surface, comprises driving the package, until an initial thickness of yarn has been wound on the support, otherwise than by said frictional contact while holding said yarn surface, and the package-support surface on which yarn is wound, out of engagement with said driving surface. Yarn 5 from a driven package 6 is up-twisted and wound on to a support 27 held between rubber &c. cheese-holder members 25, 26 which project beyond the surface of the support 27 and are carried by a U- frame 11 furnished with one leg 22 of spring steel held in winding position by a latch 29. The frame 11 is attached to vertical rods 14 slidable in frame portions 15 so that the frame 11 may rise as the package 12 grows; the frame 11 being retained in the raised position (for doffing) by a catch 16. The latch 29 is swung about a pivot 31 for this purpose and the leg 22 flexed back. The core holder member 26, extended at 38, is slit at 39 so that the leading portion of yarn may be attached thereto at starting-up and the waste portion of yarn wound on the extension 38, the yarn being guided thereto by a notch 34 in a plate 33 attached to the latch 29. When the uptwisting spindle 7 has attained full speed after starting- up, the yarn is transferred by the operator to a second notch 35 in the plate 33 and a transfer tail is wound on the bobbin 27. When sufficient turns have been wound, the yarn is released from the notch 35 and is automatically taken up by the self-threading guide 41 reciprocated along the length of the support 27.
