Abstract

739,942. Inductors. STANDARD TELE. PHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Feb. 23, 1954, No. 5287/54. Class 38 (2). A variable inductor comprises a core including two parts 16, 27 of magnetic ferrite each having a projection to form a central stem around which is placed the coil 19 on a former 18, and cemented respectively to a conducting case 11 and its cover 10 so that upon rotation of this cover relative to the case, the two core parts rotate relatively so as to vary the shape of the airgap lying between the opposing faces of the core parts. These faces are inclined at an angle to a plane perpendicular to the core axis. The magnetic circuit is completed by a cylinder 20 of magnetic ferrite surrounding the coil 19, and provide continuous force to hold the core parts together, the cover 10 is made of corrugated resilient metal such as beryllium copper. The cover 10 is clipped on the case 11 and held in position by a circlip 31 which is located in indentations in both cover and case, whereby relative rotation without axial movement is possible. The terminals 24 are mounted on plate 25 covering a hole in the case, and feet are formed from base 14 of the case. To make the inductance core permeability independent of temperature core parts 16, 27 may have suitable positive and cylinder 20 suitable negative temperature coefficients of permeability.
