Phonographic recorders and pick--tips; magnetic instruments; diaphragms.-A device for converting mechanical vibrations into electrical vibrations or vice versa of the moving-coil type has the coil mounted upon a diaphragm which is capable of flexing about a diameter to permit rotary oscillation of the coil, and the magnetic field throughout the portions associated with the coil, has the same general direction and sense. The coil 20 is mounted on a diaphragm 8 provided with a stiffening circular corrugation 22 and a diametral corrugation 23 allowing diametral flexure. The coil oscillates in a magnetic field provided by the pole pieces 4, 5 of the electromagnet 1, a core. 13 of iron supported on a brass member 16 providing a low-reluctance return circuit for the flux. The leads 24, 25 from the coil 20 are taken out through the groove 23 to terminals 26, 27. The diaphragm is oscillated by a wooden stylus 11 with a sapphire point 12 and closes a chamber 6 filled with oil 28 which damps the vibrations of the diaphragm. Specification 275,567 is referred to.
