Abstract
738,270. Ion trapping in cathode-ray tubes. TELEFUNKEN GES. [formerly TELEFUNKKEN GES FUR DRAHTLOSE TELEGRAPHIE]. April 28, 1952 [April 28, 1951], No. 10637/52. Class 39 (1). In a cathode-ray ion trapping arrangement in which negative ions are made to follow a different path from the electrons by means of a magnetic deflecting field, the ions are absorbed by causing them to strike a getter surface. The getter surface, which may be of barium, magnesium or aluminium or mixtures thereof is coated on metal target 9 by vaporizing getter 10. Diaphragm 5 may also be coated with getter material in the vicinity of aperture 8. Alternatively target 9 may be dispensed with and diaphragm 5 serves as the sole getter surface. To coat diaphragm 5 a getter is arranged facing an aperture of, or inside, anode 7 and is vaporized by eddy current heating. The gun axis may be inclined to the tube axis, as shown, or may be coaxial therewith if the anode and a control electrode have one or both of their adjacent ends extending obliquely to the tube axis.
