Abstract
965,883. Cathode-ray tubes. RAULAND CORPORATION. May 16, 1963 [May 17, 1962], No. 19443/63. Heading H1D. In a high transconductance electron gun, e.g. for use in a television receiver, in which the control electrode 20, Fig. 2, has an aperture 31 small relative to the emitting surface of the cathode 19 and has a spacing from the cathode which is smaller than the thickness of the control electrode at the aperture, the cathodecontrol electrode space is filled with insulating material 34 except for a region 35 of diameter not less than 1.05 times the diameter of the aperture in order to avoid disturbing effects due to surface charges. The insulation may be a coating on the control electrode, an apertured cup placed over the closed end of the cathode, a ring-shaped insulator of mica or steatite or a protrusion on the cathode formed by spraying on several layers of insulation while masking off the central emitting area. A mesh grid may be fitted across the aperture as at 33 in Fig. 6 where a ring-shaped insulator 39 is formed on the shoulder 43 of a cathode which has a protruding central area 41. The insulator is preferably made of spongy or porous material, e.g. of aluminium oxide, magnesium oxide, barium oxide, zironium oxide or titanium dioxide, to minimize heat loss. Specification 874,212 is referred to.
