Abstract

736,954. Elastic fabrics; yarns and threads. CLAY, P. E. F. Aug. 13, 1952 [Aug. 2, 1951], No. 18276/51. Classes 120(3) and 142(4). [Also in Group VIII] An elastic fabric has composite weft yarns comprising a rubber thread and a stretch - inhibiting thread secured together, the weft being thick in relation to the gauge of the fabric but being beaten up tightly so that when the stretchinhibiting thread is subsequently removed, the elastic threads remaining are normally spaced. The weft consists of a rubber thread 1 and a soluble alginate thread 2 laid parallel as shown, or slightly twisted together, or one straight with the other making a long-pitch helix about it, the two being bound together by a soluble alginate thread 3 and two ends (or a roving) of cotton 4, the cotton wrapping may be applied before the alginate wrapping. The cotton wrapping may be applied to the rubber thread 1 before combining it with the alginate thread 2 ; or both wrappings may be applied to the rubber thread, the alginate thread 2 then being applied as a longer pitch helix. The rubber thread may be in relaxed or stretched condition when incorporated in the yarn. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 678,507.
