Abstract

An elastic yarn is formed by plying an elastomeric thread with an even number of twisted yarns of a non-stretchable nature-i.e. non-elastomeric and not textured to produce stretch-half of the yarns being twisted in a one direction, and the other half to a greater extent in the other direction, the composite yarn being twisted in the first direction to an extent sufficient to balance the torque from the twisted yarns. The twisted yarns are twisted at least about 10 turns per inch while in the examples the composite yarn has a twist up to 5 turns per inch and is formed on a down-twister. The thread may be composed of rubber, synthetic rubber-various examples of which are listed-, or spandex. The covering yarns, which may be of continuous filaments or stable fibres, may be composed of rayon, cellulose acetate, cotton, wool, polyesters, polyamides, or acrylonitrile polymer or copolymers. A blended yarn may be used, while yarns of different materials may be combined in the composite yarn.
