1323292 Bulked yarns IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 15 Dec 1970 [19 Dec 1969] 62009/69 Headings D1F and D1W A blended staple fibre yarn comprises up to 75% by weight of drawn, low or normal shrinkage (e.g. 6% in boiling water) polyethylene terephthalate fibres and up to 50% of undrawn, optionally crimped, high shrinkage (e.g. 30% in boiling water) polyethylene terephthalate fibres, the latter having a length e.g. 38 m.m., significantly (at least 10%) less than the effective staple length e.g. 50 m.m., of the blend. The blend may also comprise up to 50% of cellulosic e.g. viscose rayon fibres. Yarn is spun on the cotton system wherein the stated difference in staple length ensures that the short fibres are carried, with adequate control, by longer fibres in the drafting stage(s) without risk of unwarranted attenuation thereof and consequent irregularities in the yarn. In the heat treatment of the final yarn or fabric woven from single or doubled such yarn to develop bulk and handle therein, the shrinking undrawn fibres tend to migrate towards the core of the yarn leaving an outer surface in which low shrinkage fibres predominate.
