Abstract

Elastic fabric is produced by stretching an elastic yarn containing segmented polyurethane (spandix) continuous filaments and/or staple fibres by a constant or varying amount which may approach the elastic limit of the yarn, temporarily heat-selling the yarn e.g. by means of boiling water or steam to such a degree that on subsequent boiling it contracts by 30-60%, plying it with an inelastic yarn while maintaining the elastic yarn in fully extended condition, incorporating the plied yarn in a fabric e.g. by weaving or knitting, while maintaining it fully extended, and heat-relaxing the fabric to permit the elastic yarn to contract. The elastic yarn may comprise both the elastic fibres and inelastic natural or manmade fibres e.g. cotton, wool, silk, polyacrylies, polyamides, polyesters, cellulose derivatives or a blend of two or more thereof, and such latter continuous filaments or staple fibres may constitute the inelastic yarn. Examples of elastic yarns include a composite core-spun yarn i.e. a continuous filament elastic core yarn combined with one or more rovings of inelastic staple fibres, and a blended yarn of elastic and inelastic staple fibres. Constituent yarns may differ in denier, amount and direction of twist, construction and/or fibre composition. Plying is effected before or after the elastic yarn is heat-set. Yarns having different retractive properties may be used e.g. in alternate picks or in warp only, to produce ridgid or seersucker surface effects.
