Abstract

A high-bulk elastic yarn comprises a core-being 2 to 8% by weight of the yarn-of at least one continuous synthetic elastomer filament, and a sheath composed of at least one non-elastomeric fibre yarn surrounding the core in a series of helical turns, with the elastic yarn having a twist multiplier of 1.5 to 5.0 (English cotton count basis), and the sheath, when the yarn is relaxed, being bunched together so that the sheath yarn bulges outwardly in the form of loops and arches. The elastomer may be a segmented polyurethane, or may contain acrylonitrile units, while the nonelastomeric fibres may be cotton, wool, silk, polyesters, polyamides polyacrylonitriles, polyhydrocarbons, cellulose derivatives or blends thereof. The core, stretched to 2.0 to 6.5 times its fully relaxed length is either twisted with a stable fibre yarn, or core spun with a roving.
