Abstract

A yarn wrapped by fibres is produced by drafting strands of the fibres to produce loose fibres which are forwarded in an air stream to the point of convergence of at least two continuous core elements, and false-twisting the core elements so that the twist runs back to the point of convergence and the fibres are combined with but not highly twisted with the core elements, but that on reverse-twisting the core elements to remove their twist the fibres are tightly twisted about the core elements with portions of the fibres locked into place between the core elements. A suction box - Fig. 1, not shown - is arranged immediately downstream of the drafting rollers and has holes through which the drafted fibres, core elements, and the composite yarn pass. The false-twist device-which may be a fluid jet as in Specification 976,478 - is situated outside of the box. The core elements may be mono- or multifilament, or staple fibre yarns, or mixtures of continuous filaments and staple fibres, or core spun yarns. The fibres may have a length of up to 20 inches or longer. The core elements and wrapping may be composed of any natural or synthetic fibre of which many are listed and include spandex, metal, glass, asbestos and multi-component fibres.
