In the production of a balanced alternating twist plied yarn "structure" (which requires no binder, sizing agent or post-treatment such as heat-setting to retain its twist stability, although such may be exployed) an alternating twist is applied e.g. by means of a jet twister supplied with pulsating fluid, continuously or discontinuously along the length of at least one of a plurality of separate filamentary strands to provide adjacent portions therein having torque unbalance i.e. a marked tendency for succeeding portions to twist in opposite directions. If, say three, strands are so twisted, adjacent strand portions have twist correspondence but the periods of the adjacent strands are out of phase and/or the twists in adjacent strands may oppose provided there is unbalance. The strands are caused to merge and contact whilst simultaneously causing the torque unbalance to diminish whereby the adjacent strand portions become alternating twist plied about one another continuously or at intervals along the length of the yarn structure. Two or more of such "structures" may be combined e.g. by conventional plying. The strands may be crimped or uncrimped spun, monofilament or multifilament yarn, or roving, and the fibres thereof are man-made or natural e.g. of polyamides, polyamylonitrile or acrylonitrile copolymers, polyesters, polypropylene, regenerated cellulose or protein, cellulose acetate, polyvinylchloride or acetate, polyvinylidene cyanide or chloride or copolymers thereof, or wool, cotton, metal, glass, or combinations thereof, and additives such as delustrants, antioxidants and conventional finishers may be incorporated. A gang jet twister, Fig. 5 (not shown) comprises strand passageways 18 each intercepted by one portion of a divided fluid-conduit 19 communicating with a fluid manifold 26 by way of a rotatably driven helical valve 27.
