Abstract

736,435. Valves. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Feb. 12, 1954 [Feb. 12, 1953], No. 3933/53. Class 135. A valve suitable for controlling flow of liquid metal such as sodium &c. comprises a gate 4 on an arm 5 which is pivotable about a pin 36 and carries one end of a metal sealing bellows 6, the other end of which is attached to the housing. The gate has an opening 19 which is brought into register with ports 18 at the end of converging passages 2, 3 to open the valve, and discs 20 which cover the ports in the closed position. The arm 5 is rocked by a connection with a screwed shaft 11 consisting of a nut 9 which carries an indicator 41, a link 33, and an arm 45 secured by screws 46 to the arm 5. A universal coupling 47 between the shaft 11 and a nut 43 causes axial movement of a screwed shaft 29 to press the discs 20 against their seats by cam surfaces 27, 28 and rollers 26 when the valve is closed and to ease the discs from their seats by means of links 30 when the valve is opened. The discs are attached to sealing bellows. The casing is in three parts 12, 13, 14; of which the parts 12, 13 are sealed by welding 15 and clamped together by bolts 16.
