[Class 65 (i)] [Also in Group XXIX] In a closure device such as a valve, door &c. of the kind in which the closure member, e.g., a disc, is opened by withdrawing it a short distance from its seating and then swinging it through a right angle, the disc operating mechanism includes a crank-arm pivoted to the centre of the disc and adapted to lie parallel to the plane of the seating when the disc is in its closed position. The mechanism also includes biasing means, e.g., springs, tending to swing the disc in the opposite direction to that in which the arm swings during the opening movement, and the disc is provided with tracks adapted to coact with fixed abutments, so that after a small initial movement of the arm from: the closed. position the disc is swung into the fully open position. As shown in Fig. 1, a valve in a vacuum pipe line comprises two discs 1 pivotally connected to crank-arms 18 mounted on hand: or poweroperated transverse shafts 21 and coacting with rubber seatings 6 held between the flanges 3 of an evacuated casing 2, formed of central and end sections welded together, and rings 4 by which the casing is inserted into the pipe line. Movement of the cranks to open the valve is resisted by the biasing springs 43. The shafts are supported in bushes 22, Fig. 2, welded into the casing, and are each sealed at one end by a cap 27 and at the other by a rubber sleeve 29 supported by a wire coil 35, or by rings on the shaft to which the operating lever 28 is secured.
