Abstract

[Also in Group XXVIII] In a joint between a tubular member 4 and a member 1, which may be hollow or solid and of cast steel or malleable iron, the member 1 has a dowel 2 over which the member 4 is engaged and the wall of the latter is deformed locally by a punching operation to form internal projections 9 which engage in a number of spacedapart depressions 6 extending partly round the peripheral surface of the dowel. The depressions are of elongated form and have their longer axes arranged circumferentially of the dowel 2, the depth of the depressions being a maximum at the centres thereof. As shown in Fig. 2, tubes 3, 4 are joined end-to-end by a member 1 provided with two dowels 2 and an integral collar 5 or shoulder preferably equal in diameter to the tubes, the depressions being arranged in diametrically-opposed pairs and the collar or shoulder having guide marks 7 to indicate the positions of the depressions when covered by the tubes. In modifications (a), Fig. 4 (not shown), the member 1 is formed with a base portion for connection to the side of a platform or a stair, and is used for the erection of a standard forming part of a handrail; (b) a foot fitting 31, Fig. 6, has a part 32 for mounting in concrete and provided with a series of tapered projections 35 extending halfway round that part; (c) a foot fitting comprises a base 41, Fig. 7, including a flange 43 for securing to a platform and a socket 46 into which is detachably fitted the spigot portion 47 of a member 42; (d), Fig. 8 (not shown), a fitting has a pair of oppositely-disposed dowels between which is a boss portion formed with a bore to receive a transverse rail member, the boss being provided with one or more depressions or dimples whereby by the use of a punch the material of the fitting is deformed to produce internal projections to bite into the rail; (e), Fig. 9 (not shown), a dowel is provided with a transverse pad for fixing a tube to a flat surface; and (f), Fig. 10 (not shown), a fitting having a dowel portion and a cap portion is used for closing the open end of a tubular member.
