Abstract
1,067,092. Pipe couplings. STEWARTS & LLOYDS OF NEW ZEALAND Ltd. April 28, 1964 [May 1, 1963], No. 17553/64. Heading F2G. In a spigot and socket pipe or tube joint for use in tubular constructions such as scaffolding, gates and supports, longitudinal, raised sharpedged fins are provided on either the socket or the spigot for engagement with the respective complementary member whereby minor irregularities in the mating spigot and socket faces or latitudinal variations in the spigot and socket may be accommodated. In the embodiment of Fig. 7, sharp-edged fins of triangular crosssection are equally-spaced around the periphery of the spigot member 1 and taper longitudinally towards the end thereof. The spigot member is of softer material, preferably cast aluminium alloy, than that of the pipe end 3 forming the socket such that, on forcible insertion, the leading edge of the pipe will bite into the fins and form a tight joint. Said joint may be secured by a radially-slotted flat or dished member 9 attached to the spigot and arranged to resiliently engage the socket wall. Alternatively, the securement may be formed by either a pin or rivet passing laterally through the joint, Fig. 5 (not shown), or by a member screw-threaded to the pipe wall and arranged to bear on the spigot, Fig. 6 (not shown). In the embodiment of Fig. 11 (not shown), the fins are formed on the pipe socket, said socket being of softer material than the complementary spigot. The pipes may be of non-circular cross-section and the spigot may be solid or hollow. By suitably forming the spigot, angled, T- and similar joints may be constructed.
