Abstract

1,146,673. Pipe joints. E. E. JEAVONS & CO. Ltd., [trading as JEAVONS ENG. CO.]. 11 Aug., 1966 [13 Aug., 1965], No. 34675/65. Heading F2G. A pipe joint, particularly for joining polythene or other plastics pipes, comprises a fitting 24 receiving a pipe 17, a union nut 26 screwed to the fitting, a sleeve 10 which has externally tapered end portions 15 and which surrounds the pipe, and two collars 11 and 12, which surround the sleeve end portions and have internally confronting tapered surfaces 20 of steeper inclination than the sleeve end portions and which are provided with chamfered circumferential flanges 19 at the ends adjacent their internal taper surfaces for engagement with more steeply chamfered surfaces on the nut and fitting so that, on tightening of the nut, the sleeve and collars move axially relative to each other and the end portions of the sleeve are radially deformed to grip the pipe at two circumferential bands or lines. The collars are provided with cylindrical portions 18 at their ends opposite to their flanged ends which engage in bores in the nut and fitting to centre the collars with respect thereto. The sleeve, as disclosed in Specification 1,028,663, is provided with two grooves, Fig. 2 (not shown), either side of a cylindrical centre sleeve portion 14 so that, on excessive tightening of the nut, the sleeve collapses to grip the pipe at two further circumferential bands or lines. Alternatively, a single V-section or partcircular section groove may be positioned at the mid-point of the sleeve. The sleeve end portions may be provided with tubular extensions which mount the collars. An externally-flanged metal liner 28 supports the pipe end internally. The sleeve and collars are of brass.
