Abstract

1,006,952. Pipe joints. RAPID METAL DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. Nov. 6, 1963 [Oct. 5, 1962], No. 37726/62. Heading F2G. A joint for joining together in end-to-end relation a pair of tubes or pipes 6, 7 comprises a spigot portion 5 secured to the tube 6 and formed with at least one recess 5a in its extension surface, the tube 7 having at least one inwardly extending projection and the arrangement being such that the joint can be assembled by inserting the spigot portion into the other tube with the recess out of alignment with the projection and then twisting one tube relatively to the other so that the projection enters the recess. The inwardly extending projections on the tube 7, Fig. 1, are formed by the material lying between the periphery of a plate 8 secured to the end of the tube and the four edges of a square aperture cut in the plate. The size of this square corresponds to that of the cross-section of the spigot and when the spigot 5 is pushed into the aperture until the recesses 5a are aligned with the plate 8 and the tube 6 is twisted, the projections on the plate 8 extend into the recesses 5a, the bases of which are inclined as shown to give each a leading edge 5c and a trailing edge 5d whereby, when the tube 6 is twisted, the trailing edge 5d of each groove comes into wedging engagement with adjacent sides of the aperture in the plate 8 so that further turning is prevented. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 3 the spigot is of cruciform cross-section with recesses 5a in the limbs and the projections 7a in the bar 7 are inwardly pressed dimples and wedging action is obtained by inclining the sides 5e of the recesses. The bar may be of other re-entrant polygonal cross-section.
