Abstract

Standard balustrade mounting brackets are used to provide fixing and support for the basic scaffolding handrail system during building operations. The scaffold tube uprights are connected to the brackets by a bolt engaged with a nut welded inside the end of the tube. When building work is complete the scaffold tubes are removed and a permanent balustrade fitted using the brackets. <IMAGE>

Description

Combined Scaffold and Balustrade System This invention relates to combining scaffolding in conjunction with balustrades.
It is normal where balustrading is to be fitted for there to be a scaffolding requirement prior to the final balustrade being fixed.
This initial scaffolding can be an expensive item, it often needs moving as it interferes with other trades.
It is also sometimes not easy to secure the vertical bases without long uprights and braces.
Often in staircase wells these uprights span up several floors having on them many scaffold clips.
These long uprights and clips are often a nuisance to other trades whilst the building is being constructed and finished.
This invention allows for the provision of the final balustrade bottom bracket (being separate from the baluster) to be fitted, using accurate templates or jigs for siting. This bracket is then used to fix to it a specialised scaffold tube upright. The bracket provides a good solid fixing, and support for the specialised scaffold tube upright as shown on drawing 3 of 4 views 'S' 'S' 'S' and 'T' 'T' 'T'. The handrail and middle rail to the scaffold can then be fixed in the normal way, or with fittings as drawing l of 4 view 'Z' 'Z'.
Other trades can then carry on with their work round the brackets which are in their final positions. As the specialised scaffold upright is sited where the final balustrade upright or baluster will be, clear access is available.
It is also a simple matter to remove the scaffold if required.
At the appropriate time the scaffold is easily removed, and replaced by the final balustrade.
An example of this is shown on drawing 3 of 4. This clearly indicates a standard balustrade baluster bottom bracket fixed to the side of a void with the bottom of the specialised scaffold upright shown.
Combined Scaffold and Balustrade System Onto this is then bolted a specialised scaffolding upright.
This is then shown in its entirety with a probable handrail and midrail on drawing 1 of 4 views 'X' 'X' and 'Z' 'Z' and in more detail on drawing 3 of 4 views 'S' 'S' 'S' and 'T' 'T' 'T'.
Other types of possible bracket and specialised scaffold balusters are indicated on drawing 4 of 4 views 'N', 'O' 'O', 'P' P', 'Q' 'Q' and 'R' 'R'.
According to the construction programme the specialised scaffold balusters, handrail and midrail are removed.
The final balustrade can then be fitted onto the baluster brackets as indicated on drawing 1 of 4 views 'W' 'W' and iyt y An example of a possible finished base detail is shown on drawing 2 of 4 views 'U' 'U' and 'V' 'V'. Any other balustrade design could be incorporated using bottom brackets as on drawing 4 of 4 or similar.
This also enables the final balustrade to be manufactured and finished off site until required. Another variation of the same basic design is shown on drawing 4 of 4 view 'N'. This is using a floor mounted base plate with a threaded spigot sticking up vertically.
The specialised scaffold tube upright would be screwed onto the threaded spigot. In this case the specialised scaffold tube upright would be slightly shorter due to floor level height being higher than a side mounted one.
In some situations it may be necessary to insert the special adaptor as shown on drawing 4 of 4 view 'M', or similar. This could give greater rigidity for the specialised scaffold upright when required.
Both the specialised scaffold and the balustrade system would comply with the relevant BS specifications.

Claims (13)

  1. Claims
    l. The Combined Scaffold and Balustrade System enables a more precise programme of work to be carried out, particularly in difficult areas such as staircases, mezzanine areas, edges of voids and atriums etc.
  2. 2. The Combined Scaffold and Balustrade System would reduce costs of conventional methods of scaffolding areas where balustrade is to be fitted. This is due to reduced time required and easier to control.
  3. 3. The Combined Scaffold and Balustrade System would enable an accurate placement and siting of the initial baluster bracket. Thereby informing other trades of the final balustrade uprights siting precisely.
  4. 4. The Combined Scaffold and Balustrade System would enable the final balustrade to be confidently manufactured in an off site workshop, in the knowledge that the balustrade bottom brackets had been finally fixed in their correct locations and would not be moved.
  5. 5. The Combined Scaffold and Balustrade System would ensure that the balustrade bottom brackets would not be moved by the scaffolders or other trades as the specialised scaffolding would be fixed to the brackets thereby ensuring the brackets cannot be moved.
  6. 6. The Combined Scaffold and Balustrade System would enable the placement of the balustrade bottom brackets by an accurate template or fixing jig system.
  7. 7. The Combined Scaffold and Balustrade System would enable a more precise manufacture of both scaffold and balustrade.
  8. 8. The Combined Scaffold and Balustrade System would enable survey of difficult areas such as staircases, mezzanine areas, edges of voids and atriums etc much easier.
Usually they are cluttered with intrusive conventional scaffold and struts.
  9. 9. The Combined Scaffold and Balustrade System will allow the final balustrade to be finished off site with confidence as the balustrade bottom bracket location is guaranteed.
Finished being polishing, painting stove enamel, plating, powder coating, etc. All expensive finishes, if Claims modifications are necessary, are costly.
  10. 10. The Combined Scaffold and Balustrade System will allow the specialised scaffold to remain in position longer. This is because the removal of the specialised scaffold is easier than conventional scaffold. Also, the balustrade replacement accuracy is guaranteed. This means less damage to the final balustrade by other trades.
  11. 11. The Combined Scaffold and Balustrade System will ensure that less damage is done in its removal than the removal of the usual more clumsy and lengthy conventional scaffold.
  12. 12. The Combined Scaffold and Balustrade System will considerably lessen the need to move the scaffold as the specialised scaffold is less obtrusive and in the final balustrade location.
  13. 13. The Combined Scaffold and Balustrade System will allow one contractor to offer a combined deal saving time and co ordination of trades as well as an overall cost saving.
