Abstract
733,006. Liquid springs. DOWTY EQUIPMENT, Ltd., and SAVERY, R. March 24, 1954 [Jan. 26, 1953], No. 2212/53. Class 108 (3). A liquid spring comprises a first plunger 8 which is movable in thrust into a pressure vessel 3 independently of a second plunger 11 to compress the liquid, the plunger 11 being movable in engagement with the plunger 8 when tension is applied to the latter to compress the liquid. The plunger 11 has an effective area which is greater than the area of the plunger 8. The plunger 11 is of stepped formation and normally seats on a step 4 in the wall of the vessel 3. The vessel at this point is vented to atmosphere by a passage 17. The plunger 11 has packing rings 15, 16, each of which comprise an 0- ring of synthetic rubber material backed up on opposite sides by anti-extrusion rings of a harder synthetic material. The gland 7 of the plunger 8 is of the construction described in Specification 539,966, [Group XXVI]. Dashpot action is provided by orifices 18, 19. In an alternative construction, the plunger 11 is replaced by a plunger of greater area than the plunger 8, passing through a closure plug formed in the lower end of the vessel 3. There is lost motion between the two plungers, so that the plunger 8 can be driven under thrust into the vessel 3 independently of the second plunger. On tension being applied to the plunger 8, it picks up the second plunger, and thus again compresses the liquid. According to the Provisional Specification, in the latter construction, the plunger 8 may be tubular and may have a radially inwardly projecting lug which co-operates with a projecting stem on the second plunger to provide the lost motion.
