Abstract
920,959. Stuffing-box substitutes. JONAS WOODHEAD & SONS Ltd. Jan. 10, 1962, No. 964/62. Class 122 (5). Sealing means between relatively movable inner and outer members, e.g. the rod 3 and casing 1 of an hydraulic shock absorber, comprises a rubber &c. sealing element 11 secured to the outer member 1 and slidably engaging the inner member 3 and which has, in its free state, a cylindrical bore 13 of approximately the same diameter as the inner member 3 and is secured to the outer member in a distorted condition such that the bore 13 is urged to assume a tapered form, as in Fig. 2B, so that the force exerted by the sealing element 11 on the member 3 is greatest adjacent to one end of the bore 13. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the element 11 is a flat disc in its free state, as shown in Fig. 2A, and is clamped between frusto-conical surfaces of parts 9 and 10 urged together by a spring 12. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the sealing element is frusto-conical in its free state and is secured to the outer member in the form of a flat disc.
