Abstract
1,056,796. Clamps. E. M. TOROSSIAN. Oct. 3, 1963. No. 39034/63. Heading E2B. A device for locking a rod T Fig. 3 against longitudinal movement, comprises a coil spring R surrounding the rod, such that initial adhesion exists or can be established between the spring and the rod so that the rod is rotatable in one direction, and a fixed abutment 1 which bears on part only of the first turn of the spring, the arrangement being such that when adhesion exists or has been established between the spring and the rod, longitudinal movement in one direction causes the spring to rock about the abutment in the direction of movement so as to increase the pressure of the spring on the rod as the force tending to move the rod, increases. In an example, Fig. 10 of other arrangements (not shown), a spring Rl in its unstressed state is of slightly larger diameter than that of a rod T and is anchored at its ends 107, 108 in rings 109, 110 which are anchored respectively to a frame member 115 and to the rod T, the ring 110 being slidable over the rod and abutting a stop plug 118 secured to the member 115. The arrangement is such that when the rod T is rotated in the direction of the arrow, F4 to thereby stress the spring, the latter becomes locked to the rod and prevents longitudinal movement of the rod in either direction. In another arrangement, Fig. 11 (not shown) for locking two relatively slidable members 0 and 0 1 the member 0 and the rod and spring arrangement corresponds to that of Fig. 10, the rod T extending outwarly of the member 0 1 and being fixed therein by a ring 121 and a flange 122 of a handle P. Angular movement of the handle is limited by a cam and spring loaded plunger arrangement 123..126.
