A shock absorbing device comprises a rod, 2, urged in one direction by a spring, 4, a member, 5, connected to the rod and movable thereby and a friction member 8 urged by the spring into contact with the movable member, 5, when the rod, 2, moves in the direction against the spring, with a force depending on the displacement of the spring. in the embodiment shown the rod, 2, is connected by a pin 7 in a recess in a cylindrical member 5 which rotates between friction surfaces 10. Abutment 9 limits the movement of the friction member 8.
