Abstract

772,419. Frictionally-damped resilient mountings. BARRY CONTROLS, Inc. Dec. 29, 1955 [Jan. 17, 1955], No. 37245/55. Class 108(3). A vibration isolator comprises a housing 45 into which extends a load attachment member 46 supported within the housing 45 by two conical springs 51, 52, arranged with their smaller ends acting in opposite directions against a portion of the member 46, and their larger ends acting respectively against the opposite ends of the housing 45, the springs 51, 52 being partially compressed in the unloaded position of the member 46, means being provided for friction-damping of relative movement between the member 46 and the housing 45. As shown the springs 51, 52 are of rubber. A friction damping element 54 is urged by a spring washer 55 into contact with a washer 57 carried by the member 46. The periphery of the member 54 is formed into an annular groove to accommodate a spring 61. The periphery of the disc 54 is slotted radially so that it is in the form of a series of resilient fingers. In operation, lateral movement of the member 46 is frictionally damped by relative movement between the element 54 and the washer 48. Axial movement of the member 46 is damped by frictional engagement of the peripheral fingers of the element 54 with the sides of the housing 45. In a modification, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), the springs 51, 52 are replaced by respective conicallywound coil springs. The large diameter end of each coil spring bears on the respective end face of the housing 45 through the intermediary of a resilient. abutment washer formed of nylon. The element 54 in this construction is of nylon and instead of being formed with peripheral resilient fingers the element 54 is divided diametrically into two halves.
