Abstract

907,408. Buffers; friction-type shock absorbers. MAIER, K. W. July 15, 1960, No. 24653/60. Class 108(3). A friction damped spring unit comprises a pair of nested helical springs 8, 9, Fig. 3, having mutual camming surfaces 14, 15 which cause the outer or inner faces 10, 11 of the springs to be radially compressed into frictional engagement with the walls 13 of the spring casing 3 or the outer surface 12 of the inner member 2. The damping unit is disposed between the load applying member 16 and a compression spring 6 which may be integrally formed with one of the springs 8, 9. In modifications the overall length may be reduced by disposing the spring 6 at least partially within the springs 8, 9 which are supported by a flanged cup. Additional resilience may also be provided by providing a thin outer casing 23, Fig. 11, which is slotted at 24 to permit radial expansion under load. The casing 23 may be reinforced by a sleeve 25 of elastic material such as circumferentially wound bonded glass fibre.
