Abstract

880,248. Torsional vibration dampers. CROMAS ENGINEERING CO. Aug. 10, 1960 [Aug. 13, 1959], No. 27670/59. Addition to 858,739. Class 108(3). In a viscous friction damper comprising a metal flywheel 10, Fig. 1, mounted within a casing 16 containing viscous damping fluid according to the parent Specification the non-metallic bearing material 26, 44 is fitted in the casing 16 or on the flywheel 10 without bonding such as by a press-fit. The thrust bearings 44 may further have arcuate grooves 43, Fig. 3, on the friction surfaces to improve the heat dissipation by damping fluid circulation. In another example the flywheel, 10, Fig. 4, is a push fit over the bearing 26 which projects at the ends 25 to thereby act as a thrust bearing. In other examples a casing 16 of aluminium is indicated as improving the heat dissipation. Thrust pad discs 88, Fig. 5 (not shown), are also described as an alternative to the thrust bearings 44.
