Abstract

1,008,218. Remotely operated fastenings. BRITISH RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION: August 24, 1964 [Sept. 26, 1963], No. 37906/63. Heading E2A. [Also in Division F2] A quick release coupling has a rod-like retainable portion 19 and a socket-like retainer portion 11 with a tubular abutment member 13 to receive the rod portion 19 extending through it into a recess 12 in which a cup-like piston 16 is movable from a position where its flange 17 surrounds and holds a divided collet 20 in engagement with the part of the rod-like portion which protrudes beyond the member 13 into the recess 12; a frangible member 22 serving to resist displacement of the piston from its holding portion and to determine a minimum pressure on the piston which will displace it and so release the collet and the rod-like portion. Fluid pressure for the release is admitted at 27 to the space behind the piston where a central raised portion 25 and a resilient dished washer 26 maintains pressure of the piston stem 18 on the disc 22. The piston is sealed by an O-ring at 17a. The member 13 may be unscrewed from the portion 11 to reassemble the collets on the rod-portion.
