Abstract

809,682. Liquid springs. DOWTY EQUIPMENT Ltd. April 8, 1957 [April 9, 1956], No. 10768/56. Class 108(3) A spring device comprises a liquid spring having a plunger 14 slidable through one end of a liquid-filled cylinder 1, the plunger head 17 slidably fitting the bore of the cylinder 1 in sealing relationship, and a porous plug 25 of high resistance to liquid flow interposed in a communication between the cylinder spaces 19, 20, defined by the head 17. The arrangement is such that when the liquid spring is subject to an applied load, the flow through the porous plug is negligible over a prescribed short period of time (e.g. a few seconds). The plug 25 may be of sintered metal or ceramic material, or a porous material of synthetic or fibrous organic material, such as chrometanned leather. The plug 25 may be encircled by a sealing ring 26, and may be faced on both sides with discs 26a of fine wire gauze. Filling is carried out at low temperature through a plug 12 so that at normal temperature the liquid will be under a pre-load.
