732,554. Couching webs from paper-making machines. EMPIRE PAPER MILLS, Ltd., WESTERN, A. W., and TAYLOR, W. June 22, 1953 [June 26, 1952], No. 16048/52. Class 96. Variations in the position 3 at which the wet web 2 is couched from the wire-cloth 1 of a paper - making machine affect the suction in a chamber 6 which communicates with a diaphragmswitch 13 &c. adjustably spring-loaded at 16, 17 to'indicate as by a lamp 14 or bell &c. the need to adjust the machine to restore the position 3 of couch. The chamber 6 is exhausted by the pumping action of the holes 18 in the couch roll shell 4 leaving the suction zone of the box 5, air entering through the holes 18 when the web is couched too early. In modifications: (1) suction in the box 5 assists directly in exhausting the chamber 6 via a passageway extending from one to the other; (2) the chamber 6 communicates directly with the inside of the couch roll shell 4 instead of via the seal 9 of the box 5; (3) an arrangement may provide a flickering light when the couch position is correct, the lamp 14 being lit steadily or unlit when the position 3 is too high or too low; or (4) there may be two warning devices; (5) the variations of the position 3 may be recorded; or (6) they may be corrected automatically.
