Abstract

775,206. Suction pick-up rolls of paper-making machines &c. DOMINION ENGINEERING WORKS, Ltd. Dec. 9, 1954, No. 35731/54. Class 96. A suction pick-up roll 5, Fig. 2, of a fourdrinier paper-making machine &c. is mounted for swinging movement about a pivotal axis A in a bearing bracket 160 for the main suction conduit 167, the corresponding pivotal bearing for the other end of the support for the roll 5 being at the axis of a drive shaft 20, Fig. 5, carrying a sprocket (not shown) for a chain drive for the roll 5. The web is picked off the wire-cloth 151a at a position adjacent the couch roll 152 and transferred to a pick-up felt 151 with the aid of a high-vacuum zone 46, Fig. 24, which adjoins a zone 47 of lower vacuum which counteracts the effect of centrifugal force tending to throw the web from the felt. The sealing-strips for both zones are pressed against the inside of the roll shell with the aid of pneumatic tubes 68 pressing against non-corrosive strips 72. Each zone is divided by a transverse partition into a short length near the end 9 of the roll for the lead-strip which is cut on the wire-cloth on starting-up, and a much longer length for the remainder of the web during normal running. Suction is applied to the suction box through valves &c. which can be actuated by turning hand-levers 122a and 149a. For normal running both sections of the high vacuum zone 46, and both sections of the low, 47, are respectively at the same degree of suction, and the two valves which are frictionally engaged normally rotate as a unit when the valve-control lever 122a is turned. The longer compartments of both suction zones 46, 47 are interconnected through a port &c. with a vacuum-reducing metering plug, and are opened to the atmosphere for starting up. The position of the suction zones can be adjusted with the aid of a spanner &c. applied to an end 34 of a worm-shaft 32 to turn a worm-wheel 30 which is keyed to the suction box journal 22.
