Abstract

A polishing material which is substantially rigid at ordinary temperatures and maintains its composition substantially constant on continued exposure to the atmosphere, comprises a wax or wax-like material or a mixture of such materials, a non-volatile solvent, and a spread-promoting substance. The wax or waxlike material may comprise paraffin wax, beeswax, carnauba wax, candelilla wax or a mixture of these or other such materials. Magnesium stearate or other water-insoluble soap is preferably added to the composition. The non-volatile solvent may be an ester of phthalic acid, e.g. di-butyl phthalate; amyl salicylate and triethyl citrate are also specified. A small proportion of a volatile solvent may also be added to facilitate solution of substances such as colouring matter. The spread-promoting substance may be an organic substance which is miscible with the molten wax-solvent mixture, but which tends to crystallize out when the cooled mixture solidifies; specified substances are nitronaphthalene, naphthalene, camphor and tri-phenyl phosphate or mixtures thereof. In an example, a polish comprises: paraffin wax 36 per cent by weight, carnauba wax 23 per cent, beeswax 7 per cent, magnesium stearate 7 per cent, di-butyl phthalate 14 per cent, tri-phenyl phosphate 3 per cent, nitro-naphthalene 7 per cent, and naphthalene 3 per cent, the molten mixture being moulded or cast to form blocks, e.g. in contact with fibrous material which may constitute a holder.
