Abstract

A composition for coating and impregnating artificial flowers and fruit and similar articles comprises a wax and 10-37 per cent by weight of a terphenyl, a mixture of isomeric terphenyls, a hydrogenated terphenyl or an N-xenyl stearamide. Natural or synthetic waxes or wax substitutes may be used; paraffin wax, ceresin, hemp wax, bayberry wax, beeswax, carnauba wax, candelilla wax, chinese wax, japan wax montan wax, ozokerite and spermaceti are specified. By " wax substitutes " is meant a fatty alcohol such as cetyl alcohol, an ester of a fatty alcohol with a fatty acid such as cetyl palmitate, an ester of a glycol or polyglycol with a fatty acid such as diethylene glycol distearate, a partial glycerol ester with a fatty acid such as monostearin or hydrogenated castor oil (opal wax). Ortho-, meta- and paraterphenyls, hydrogenated meta- and paraterphenyls, and N-ortho- and para-xenylstearamides may be used as the additive. Examples of wax compositions for coating paper are given; they are preferably applied in the form of a hot melt, but may be used in the form of a solution or an emulsion.
