[Also in Division C3] A base composition for pharmaceutical and cosmetic sticks comprises a mixture of a polyalkylene glycol ether of a C12-22 fatty alcohol and a polyalkylene glycol ester of a wax acid, the polyalkylene glycol components being synthesised from 2 to 100 molecules of ethylene oxide, propylene oxide or butylene oxide. Suitable fatty alcohols are lauryl, myristyl, palmityl, eicosyl, behenyl, oleyl, linoleyl and linolenic alcohols. The wax acid contains 22 to 36 carbon atoms and may be natural or synthetic. Examples are behenic, lignoceric, cerotic, montanic, triacontanic and mixtures such as those obtained by oxidising crude montan wax with chromic acid. The proportions of ether to ester may vary from about 9:1 to 1:9 by weight. The compositions are particularly useful when the active ingredient is acidic, e.g. boric, salicylic and linolenic acids and aluminium salts, particularly Al 2 (OH) 5 Cl. Other ingredients which may be present are mono- and polyhydric alcohols, water and polyethylene glycols.
