Abstract

Compositions capable of producing heat on being mixed with water comprise dimethyl sulphoxide and a substantially non-aqueous gelling substance or soap, the dimethyl sulphoxide being present in an amount from 20-95% by weight of the total weight of the composition. The soap may be a fatty acid soap, e.g. stearate soaps, triethanolamine oleate, triethanolamine oleate soaps of coconut oil fatty acids, and of soya oil fatty acids, or one or a combination of synthetic detergents and thickeners, e.g. Promulgen G, a polyethylene glycol ether of a fatty acid, Pluracol V-10, a polyoxyalkylene polyol, Miranol and Ninol 128 Extra, a coconut fatty acid amide. The words "Pluracol" and "Ninol" are Registered Trade Marks. The soap compositions may be combined with aerosol propellants, e.g. n- or isobutane, propane, dichlordifluormethane, 1,2-dichlor - 1,1,2,2 - tetrafluorethane, monofluortrichlormethane, trichlortrifluorethane, or blends thereof, or nitrous oxide, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide. The aerosol soap compositions may also include mono- or poly-hydric alcohols as solubilizers, as well as foam stabilizers, lubricants, e.g. glyceryl esters, emollients, e.g. lanolin, and cetyl alcohol, perfumes and flavouring materials. A preferred composition comprises dimethylsulphoxide, an alkaline shaving soap mixture, and a gelling substance comprising a copolymer of acrylic acid and polyallyl sucrose, e.g. Carbopol 934,940,941. The word "Carbopol" is a Registered Trade Mark. The alkaline ingredient may be triethanolamine, diisopropanolamine, or alkali metal hydroxide. The compositions of the invention may be used to formulate de-icing compositions.ALSO:Compositions capable of producing heat on being mixed with water comprise dimethyl sulphoxide and a substantially non-aqueous gelling substance or soap, the dimethyl sulphoxide being present in an amount of 20-95% by weight of the total weight of the composition. Pharmaceutical components may be added to the dimethyl sulphoxide compositions which contain the gelling substance together with conventional excipients. Preferred gelling substances are copolymers of acrylic acid and a polyallyl sucrose, e.g. Carbopol 940, 941, and 934 (the word "Carbopol" is a Registered Trade Mark). Examples are given of analgesic and aromatic chest rubs, the ingredients of the formulations including methyl salicylate, benzocaine, glycol monosalicylate, methyl nicotinate, capsicum oleoresin, camphor, menthol, thymol, encolyptol, pine oil, clove oil, diisopropanolamine, polyethylene oxide sorbitan mono-oleate and histamine dihydrochloride, choline salicylate, turpentine, sassafras, hyoscyamus extract and oil of mustard may also be added. The compositions of the invention may be used in preparing hand lotions and creams as well as pharmaceutical compositions for both topical and internal application. The compositions may contain some water, provided that the amount is sufficiently low for the compositions to evolve heat on subsequent mixing with water. The soap component may be one or a combination of synthetic detergents or a fatty acid soap, e.g. triethanolamine oleate.
