Abstract

The wax content of polishes, particularly suitable for treating linoleum, consists for the larger part of free wax acids, i.e. aliphatic carboxylic acids physically similar to waxes and containing more than 20 carbon atoms in the molecule. The wax acids, which may be natural or artificial, such as carnaubic acid, or acids obtained from montan wax or by oxidizing ozokerite, are melted together with the other wax constituents such as paraffin, ozokerite, beeswax, &c. and a solvent such as oil of turpentine is added. Emulsifying agents such as wax soaps, organic sulphonic acids and their salts, sulphonated castor oil, the material known by the registered Trade Mark "Nekal," &c. may also be added, particularly if water is present.
