Abstract
A suppository base comprises a water insoluble base e.g. one or more fatty acid glycerides and a pharmaceutically acceptable gel forming soap in a quantity such that the viscosity of the composition at its casting temperature is about 100 centipoises, the composition being solid as temperatures below 25 DEG C. and softenable at normal human body temperatures. The preferred glycerides are those of saturated C12-C18 fatty acids. The preferred soaps are aluminium soaps of long chain fatty acids especially aluminium mono- and di-stearate. They are used in quantities of 0,5 to 3,0, and preferably 2% based on the glyceride. The soap is dissolved in an organic solvent such as chloroform, petroleum ether or benzene, added to the melted glycaride, the solvent removed and one or more solid medicaments e.g. bismuth subnitrate or subgallate incorporated therein, cast into suppository moulds and allowed to set.
