Abstract
A dry, free flowing, resin coated sand for use in making shell moulds is prepared by coating individual particles of sand with a non-solvent plasticizer, adding powdered thermosetting resin and coating the resulting resin coated sand with a layer of wax by treatment, without heating, with a solution or dispersion of the wax in a volatile solvent. The non-solvent plasticizer is one which does not dissolve or swell the resin in the cold, but which dissolves it at 200-250 DEG C., and has low viscosity and volatility, e.g. a diester of phthalic acid with an aliphatic monohydric alcohol, for example, dibutyl phthalate. The non-solvent plasticizer is used in amount 0.1-0.6% wt. of the sand. The thermosetting resin, e.g. a phenol formaldehyde resin of particle size such that only 5% is retained on a 200 mesh screen, is used in amount 2-10% wt. of the sand. Waxes, in amount 0.05-0.5% of the sand, include paraffin or carnauba wax, Japwax, or Acrawax dissolved or suspended in aromatic solvents, e.g. benzene, toluene, xylene or solvent naphtha or in other solvents, e.g. white spirit or turpentine. A dispersion of carnauba wax in benzene is preferred.
