The furnace of an incinerator with electric heating elements 3 is spaced from the outer casing 1, and supported on a lagged metal framework 9. Air is drawn through passages 4 to cool the outer casing by a fan 8 which also blows air through a duct 5 into the flue 7 so as to withdraw the combustion products from the furnace. The heating elements 3, which are curved forwardly at the bottom to form a sloping grate, and the electric fan 8 are energized by opening a sliding door 13. A time-switch is arranged to cut off the current a predetermined time after the door 13 is closed. In a modification, the fan blows air into a venturi attachment leading from the rear of the furnace. and the cooling air flows out through an annular opening surrounding the furnace outlet.
