Abstract

721,663. Cable joints. POSTMASTER GENERAL. Nov. 29, 1950 [July 5, 1948; Feb. 10, 1949], Nos. 18075/48 and 3737/49. Class 38 (1). In a method of joining the ends of sheathed cables 1, 2, at least one of which is a non-lead sheathed cable, by means of a lead sleeve 3 enclosing a connection 4 between the cable conductors, a lead collar is secured on the end of each non-lead sheathed cable by a mass of polythene or similar material and the sleeve 3 plumbed to it. In the example shown two polythene sheathed cables have lead collars 7, 8 secured thereto by polythene masses 10, 11. The collars are partly embedded in the masses with the latter in a hot plastic state after which they are allowed to cool and shrink on the collars and sheaths, the collars being provided with keying holes 9. The sleeve 3 is plumbed to the collars at 5, 6. Preferably, each polythene mass is moulded and compressed whilst in a plastic state by means of a device such as that described in Specification 721,664, [Group V].
