Abstract

676,543. Injection-moulding; making cable joints. TELEGRAPH CONSTRUCTION & MAINTENANCE CO., Ltd. Feb. 14, 1951 [Nov. 14, 1949], No. 29135/49. Class 87(ii) A method of uniting or bonding thermoplastic bodies or bodies having a thermoplastic coating comprises enveloping the bodies (or the parts thereof adjacent the joint to be made) in a mould casing, injecting hot gas into the mould casing to soften the thermoplastic material, and finally injecting thermoplastic material to form the bond between the bodies or build up the coating thereon. The invention is illustrated in connection with the jointing of two electric cable conductors C, C' provided with insulation A which may be polythene. The bared ends of the conductors are joined at B by soldering or brazing, with or without a sleeve, ferrule or the like 2, and a mould in two parts 3, 4 (or more than two parts) is assembled around this joint. Packing and heat-insulating sleeves 9 are provided at the mould ends. Hot gas (air or nitrogen) is then blown into the mould through orifice 6 and escapes through holes 7. A portable electrically-heated blower may be used. The hot gas softens that part 1 of the insulation that is within the mould. Polythene is then injected through orifice 6 into the mould, as by a hand-operated plunger type injector. The injection may be continued until the material has cooled. Fins 8 on the mould facilitate cooling. The injection orifice may open tangentially into the mould. Joints may thus be made in the field or in manholes. Large mouldings of polythene may be made by using a small mould to make part of the moulding and then moulding further parts thereonto by the method of the invention; in a similar way intricate mouldings may be made in two or more operations.
