Abstract

[Also in Divisions B3, B8 and F2] For use, e.g., in cable jointing, a tubular member of heat-recoverable material, such as polyethylene or P.T.F.E., having the property of elastic memory and in deformed unstable condition, has fusible material arranged in the path of its recovery, and may also contain solder. By virtue of its deformed state, the member may readily be placed around conductors to be jointed; it is then heated to cause the recoverable member to return towards its original shape and size so as to enclose the joint, and to melt the fusible material and the solder, if present. The fusible material, which may be in the form of a member of, say, thermoplastic, or of powder applied to the recoverable member, produces a seal and the solder connects the conductors. Unstripped plastic-covered wires 11 may be jointed by placing them in a tubular heat-recoverable member 8, Fig. 5, having one end closed by moulding or sealing and a lining 9 of thermoplastic capable of bonding to the insulation of the wires. A ball 10 of solder and flux is held within the member and when the assembly is heated, preferably by high-frequency induction heating, the insulation migrates from the ends of the wires, a soldered joint is formed and the material 9 encloses the join as the member 8 contracts to its original form. The tubular member may be open at both ends for joining coaxial wires and a short rigid tube may be provided in the centre of the fusible lining, Fig. 7 (not shown). Alternatively, the tubular member may be formed, Fig. 12A (not shown), so that in use the solder will flow around the conductors to be jointed and will help to force their insulation away from their ends, and the fusible material may be provided at the open end to prevent escape of the solder. The joint between the conductors may be effected by crimping or twisting instead of by soldering and the recoverable tube may be formed by spirally winding a sheet. A fusible member, Fig. 11 (not shown), having a number of passages may be used when several conductors are to be jointed independently. The member has many other applications (see Divisions B8 and F2).
