Abstract

1334969 Electric couplings RAYCHEM CORP 9 Nov 1971 [16 Nov 1970] 51972/71 Heading H2E A termination for a tape cable comprises a heat-shrinkable insulating member consisting of a sheath portion for receiving an end of a tape cable and communicating with a plurality of spaced integrally connected, tubular members for receiving individual conductors of the cable. As shown, Fig. 1, two sheets 15, 26 of heatrecoverable material are edge-bonded at 17, 18 to form two sheaths 11, 21, which are joined by tubular members 12 defined by a series of seams 13. Alternatively, a single sheet may be folded and bonded at mating edges. A ring 34 of fusible polymeric material in sheath 11 flows when the sheath is heat-shrunk down over an inserted cable-end to enhance insulation and sealing. Ends of tape cables may be inserted into sheaths 11, 21, an exposed conductor of each cable end being disposed in each tubular member 12 together with a ring of solder; alternatively, the conductors may be tinned. When the assembly is heated, the conductors are soldered together and the sheaths 11, 21 and tubular members 12 shrink down to seal and provide strain relief for the connections. Alternatively, one of the sheaths may be shrunk on to a terminal block, the terminals of which extend into tubular members 12, wherein they are soldered to the conductors of a tape cable inserted in the other sheath. Fig. 5 depicts a heatshrinkable member 22 comprising a single sheath 25, and integral tubular members 26 adapted to be shrunk around bosses 30 of a connector block 28, to enable terminal ends of socket contacts 31 protruding through the bosses to be soldered to conductors 32 of a tape cable 27 inserted into sheath 25. The tubular members may contain rings of solder and/or of fusible polymeric material. Insulating grease or heat-catalysed adhesive may replace fusible polymeric material in sheath or tubular members.
