Abstract
440,076. Cable joints. NORDDEUTSCHE SEEKABELWERKE AKT.- GES., Nordenham, Germany. March 7, 1935, No. 7186. Convention date, Feb. 4. [Class 38 (i)] [See also Group V] In jointing cables that are insulated with thermoplastic material such as guttapercha, balata, caoutchouc, wax, polyvinyl compounds, &c., the insulation on one or both cable ends 11, 12 is heated and pushed back from the conductor a so as to form a thickening or enlargement c. The bare conductor is then cut to the required length for making a joint d which is soldered or welded. Finally, the mass of insulation c is kneaded and worked back over the joint by means of a pair of rollers 19, 20 grooved to fit the normal cable and mounted in a casing 16 that is capable of being opened and can be traversed over the joint. The insulation is heated by steam or a spirit flame and kneaded by the rollers until the joint is covered by a homogeneous layer. The cable may be drawn through the rollers, the frame being stationary.
