Abstract

789,909. Couplings. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES, Ltd. Oct. 24, 1956 [Oct. 24, 1955], No. 30370/55. Class 38 (1). A method of connecting the polyethylene sheaths 1, 2 of two cables comprises lapping the ends of the sheaths with resistance wires 4, 5, connecting the wires by a low resistance copper wire 7, sliding a polyethylene sleeve 9 into the position shown and clamping it by clamps 10, 11 and then passing a current through the wires so welding the sleeve to the sheaths. The clamps are then removed, and the tiles of the wires trimmed off. Alternatively, polyethylene rings may first be welded to the sheaths, and the sleeve then welded to the rings, and the rings may have heating elements embedded therein. The sleeve and sheaths may first be brought to a standard temperature, on the basis of which the welding current is calculated, before the joint is made.
