Abstract

1311590 Cable joints and terminations SIEMENS AG 9 Sept 1971 [5 Nov 1970] 42217/71 Heading H2E [Also in Division H1] A cable having a covering consisting of a polyolefin is covered with a layer of a crosslinkable or vulcanizable polymer of at least two olefins, e.g. at cable ends or junctions. A thermally-conducting tubular body which is split longitudinally (one half is shown in Fig. 1) is fitted around the copolymer layer and is heated, e.g. by a gas flame or electrically so that the copolymer layer reaches a sufficient temperature for vulcanization or cross-linking to take place which results in the bonding of the copolymer layer to the polyolefin layer. In one embodiment the two halves join together by tongue and slots, groove 7 receiving wires to bind them together, and a longitudinallyextending slot 6 may hold a thermometer. Alternatively, Fig. 4 (not shown), flanges (15) may be used to bolt the two halves together and tongue (12) and slot (11) are further provided with recesses (14) and (13) which together form longitudinal holes to hold thermometers. To prevent burning of the copolymer layer, the inside of the tube may be covered with a thermostable material, e.g. P.T.F.E.
