Abstract

390,817. Cable joints. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., SCOTT, T. R., and WEBB, J. K., Connaught House, Aldwych, London. Oct. 9, 1931, No. 28039. [Class 38 (i).] In an electric power cable joint the effective length of the breakdown path through the oil is increased by the use of insulating beads (preferably of polymerized styrene) disposed in the medium. In making the joint the cable ends are prepared in the usual way and after placing a sleeve 2 over the end of one cable, the contiguous cores 1 are spliced. The sleeve 2 which has a mouth 4 and outlet pipe 5, is then moved into position and filled with clean dry dielectric beads and the lid 6 pressed tightly down and sealed in position. The sleeve is then wiped to the lead sheath 7. After evacuation of the sleeve, dry degasefied oil is sucked in through the inlet pipe 8, which with the outlet pipe 5 is afterwards sealed off. Modifications of this method of preparing the joint 'are described.
