A bar-traveller for textile spinning machines has means for leading the material being spun to the package being formed and is of such flexibility as to be capable of yielding resiliently to the outward pressure of the package surface as the package diameter increases during winding. As shown a bar-traveller 16, which may be made of light strip metal, or thin plastic strip so as to be easily flexible is provided at each end with a bifurcated enlargement 161, the limbs 162, 163 of which engage over and under the rim of the ring 15. With the traveller illustrated in Fig 1 the roving 12 is led at the base of the balloon to an eye 164 then along the outer face of the traveller and through a second eye 165 at or near the point at which the roving is laid upon the package so that this eye serves to guide the roving directly to the winding point. In a second form of the traveller notches are provided on opposite edges of the traveller instead of the eye 164 so that the roving can be wound around the arm of the traveller once or twice before it passes to the winding point. The middle part 169 of the traveller is preferably enlarged so as to serve as a presser pad. When winding commences the traveller is in the position shown in Fig. 2 and when the package has attained its full diameter the traveller will be in the position shown in Fig. 3. The roving may be led from the rollers 10, 11 to the traveller either through a stationary eye 19 or through an eye (not shown) mounted centrally upon a member arranged to rotate freely upon the spindle 13.
