Abstract

A coating composition comprises an aqueous suspension of a finely-divided pigment, e.g. china clay, blanc fixe or titanium oxide, together with minor amounts of sulphonated castor oil, formaldehyde, sodium silicate and a water-soluble cellulose ether, e.g. methyl cellulose. Additional ingredients are sodium chloride, hydroxide and sulphite. The composition is suitable for marking out grass-courts and for whitening shoes and is preferably prepared by dissolving the cellulose ether in water, then mixing the pigment, sulphonated castor oil and formaldehyde with more water, then mixing the cellulose ether solution and the aqueous mixture of the other ingredients and finally adding an aqueous sodium silicate solution.
